Recovery is the process of restoring physical and mental function after exercise, stress, heat exposure, or inadequate sleep. It includes fluid balance, electrolyte replacement, muscle repair, nervous system regulation, and the return of normal performance.
Recovery supplements are products designed to support one or more recovery pathways. They may include electrolytes such as sodium, calcium, and magnesium; amino acids such as taurine, glycine, and L-theanine; antioxidants such as vitamin C; or performance-supporting compounds such as creatine.
Recovery supplements do not replace sleep, nutrition, hydration, or rest. Their role is specific: electrolytes help restore fluid balance after sweat loss, creatine can support repeated high-intensity performance and training recovery, and certain amino acids may support relaxation, sleep quality, or cellular stress responses.
Creatine is one of the most studied sports nutrition ingredients and has evidence for improving high-intensity exercise capacity and supporting recovery during repeated training. Sodium is the main electrolyte lost in sweat and is important for rehydration after prolonged exercise or heavy sweating. Magnesium, calcium, vitamin C, taurine, glycine, and L-theanine each have biological roles relevant to recovery, but their benefits depend on dose, baseline diet, training status, and the type of recovery being measured.
Antioxidants such as vitamin C help regulate oxidative stress, but more is not always better. Research on vitamin C and post-exercise soreness is mixed, and current evidence does not consistently show that antioxidant supplementation prevents delayed-onset muscle soreness.
Some ingredients may influence soreness, muscle damage markers, hydration, or sleep-related recovery, but results vary across studies. Muscle soreness is affected by training intensity, exercise novelty, sleep, nutrition, hydration, and individual fitness level.
Timing depends on the ingredient and goal. Electrolytes are most relevant during or after heavy sweating. Creatine works through repeated daily intake rather than acute timing. Sleep-support ingredients are typically used closer to bedtime. There is no universal recovery formula that fits every person or workout.
Many recovery ingredients are well tolerated at studied doses, but safety depends on the ingredient, dose, medical history, and medication use. People with kidney disease, cardiovascular conditions, blood pressure concerns, pregnancy, or chronic medical conditions should consult a healthcare professional before using recovery supplements.
